Nanoindentation and advanced AFM methods are applied to characterize the mechanical response of lithium‑ion battery materials at micro‑ and nanoscale. The session explains why rough, porous electrodes challenge conventional techniques and how optimized AFM nanoindentation yields reliable modulus and hardness data, especially for fragile separator films. Key steps in sample preparation, practical testing workflows, and early results on nano‑resolved chemical mapping using NanoIR and PiFM are presented—showing how nanoscale mechanical insights support performance, safety, and lifetime evaluation.
