LS-DYNA Polymer Crash Material Characterization and material card generation for unreinforced polymers

by Arjun Menon - 4a engineering GmbH

Crash‑relevant behavior of unreinforced thermoplastics is characterized through high‑rate testing with LINOVIS® and IMPETUS®, combined with LS‑DYNA models such as MAT_187 and GISSMO. Dynamic tension, compression, shear, and biaxial data define multiple yield surfaces, which are calibrated through an automated VALIMAT® pipeline, including AutoFit for hardening and failure parameters. The resulting strain‑rate‑dependent material card accurately reproduces puncture, bending, tensile, and shear responses across several decades of strain rate, outperforming classical MAT_024 models in crash prediction.
