Electrical arcing during thermal runaway is examined as a critical failure mode in lithium‑ion battery systems. The session outlines how conductive paths form once insulation degrades, how ionized aerosols enable plasma arcs to jump large gaps, and how these arcs ignite vented gases or accelerate propagation. Key parameters such as particle size, gap geometry, venting behavior, and electrical configuration are discussed in relation to arc onset and severity. Experimental results are used to define detection and measurement approaches, followed by practical design measures—improved busbar insulation, controlled separation of current and gas flows, and materials that limit dielectric breakdown—to enhance pack safety under extreme failure conditions.
